We've used REFS (because it is recommended by Veeam) for several smaller sites with iSCSI mappings to a Synology or just VMDK's on ESXi hosts. For no known reason to us, REFS at various customers sites has imploded multiple times on us leaving us with RAW volumes that apparently have no way of being repaired.

However, a network disconnection or an abnormal shutdown may cause file system corruption, and the LUNs will show as a RAW format in Windows Disk Management. I have tried various settings in DSM and cannot find anything that works other than using NTFS versus ReFS. I don't know what Synology could be doing to corrupt the data. For reference, I have an RS2818RP+ running 8x 4TB WD Gold drives in a RAID 10.

Solution: On top of that, ReFS is more fragile than NTFS, it's just not as stable yet. People are seeing data loss on ReFS. Also, ReFS lacks recovery tools.

Select the newly created volume, and use the filesystems command within diskpart to see if ReFS is an available option for the new volume. DISKPART> list disk. DISKPART> select disk x. DISKPART> create partition primary.

I used RefSutil -salvage and recovered about 5Tb of files to a non synology product.I am still working through how much i did not recover.

01.04.2021 · After that Veeam sees this volumen as RAW. This volume was only connected to Veeam. If Refs is so problematic that coul be destoyed by simply network config change, I will revert back with all my volumes to NFTS because I'm now very scary. We (Managecast) use Veeam and ReFS everywhere and it's solid.
