I am looking at co-location and putting a (to be purchased) host server running veeam proxy and veeam server in there, I intend to buy a NAS and connect this up using iscsi initiator, the nas I am getting quotes on at the moment is the synology RS820.

If Veeam hangs then there is an issue, if it's working it normally finishes the add task in 15-30 seconds. You don NOT need to elevate to root. If the above doesn't work you can try using the root account on the Synology.
