Taos is where our kids learned to ski, they hate to go anywhere else based on the runs. it's not really laid out like a resort. Like the others said it's about 20 or miles to TSV from Taos. I can't speak for December, but we usually stay in town in a house or our motorhome. When the lifts close there are only a few choices on the mountain.

Taos Ski Valley has some comfortably humid months, and slightly dry months in the opposite season. The least humid month is June (32.5% relative humidity), and the most humid month is December (55.6%). Wind in Taos Ski Valley is usually calm. The windiest month is April, followed by March and May.

We skied last year in December, but at Durango. It is in SW Colorado. There was more snow there than I've ever seen. Durango is a pretty easy mountain though.
