The International Phonetic Association was founded in 1886 and is the oldest organization for phoneticians. The association’s mission is to “promote the scientific study of phonetics”. The IPA is the major as well as the oldest representative organisation for phoneticians. It was established in 1886 in Paris. 2011 marked the 125th anniversary of the founding of the IPA, and 2013 marked the 125th anniversary of the first publication of the International Phonetic Alphabet and the formulation of the principles.

The official International Phonetic Alphabet, and its organization in a chart, is maintained by the Association. As noted in our 1999 Handbook (Appendix 4), modifications have always been the result of "members making proposals for changes, which were published in the journal and voted on by the Association's Council" (p. 196).
