26.03.2014 · No restart is needed to go between versions of TightVNC 2.7.x . I've also used it to make sure my client installs only have the server component. If an IT person is at the machine needed to view somewhere else then A) they should go back to their own machine or B) use a UNC to the IT machine and just run the viewer exe from there.

When I have setup VNC to access a Mac (a couple of times), you just had to define an access password for the client and this got you to whatever screen was active for the current user on the Mac, so no username was needed?
