Tightvnc on the server, ultravnc for client. That is if I can't use rdp, nx, etc. Vnc should be considered a last resort because of how inefficient it is. 4. level 2. [deleted] · 8y. It's not as bad as it used to be. UltraVNC has amazing performance if you play with the manual settings.

Tightvnc will allow you to put a password on the admin interface and like all VNC's you can hide the tray app. My take is that ultravnc is feature rich but stable poor. "Hey lets toss in encryption and domain authentication and other junk and not act surprised when none of this stuff really works right." Tightvnc is the opposite.

VNC (the RFB protocol) is really bad at being secure over the wire. It is rather like Telnet, not SSH. There are extensions to the protocol that solve this, but if someone just says "VNC", it's (still! in 2015!) not safe to assume that they support it -- partly because unencrypted VNC, with a fixed-length, cleartext password or no password at all, is so easy to implement.

RDP is much faster but only available if you have Win7 pro. TightVNC is indeed the best VNC implementation. You could also try Radmin or PC-Anywhere. Stuff like Teamviewer and LogMeIn probably aren't ideal for what you're doing. 7. level 2. yeahlikethat. · 11y. Remote Desktop Conneciton/RDP is the way to go on a LAN/intranet, IMO.

TightVNC is un-encrypted connection, except that the password, which is max 6chars sent over a 56 kb DES encrytion (still crackable). I do not trust TeamViewer, RealVNC and UltraVNC. TightVNC is open source I believe, and is good to use with SSH.
