Proxmox and / or FreeNAS (TrueNAS Core)? Help. I’m in the early design phase of a home lab. We have need for fairly significant storage, probably at least 30TB (video production) to start, and would prefer 60+. From my research, it looks like raidz3 would be a good fit for our needs. I’m thinking 12x 12TB for ~90TB usable with 3 disk ...

Proxmox is a hypervisor first. It's for running VMs. However, it can be easily modified to share files (command-line). TrueNAS/Scale is a NAS OS first. It's designed for sharing data/files over a network. It also has hypervisor capabilities as a side feature, so it's nowhere near as established in that regard.

In general, if a filer OS (such as TrueNAS/FreeNAS) natively supports virtualization, why would one run that as a virtualized guest under a hypervisor OS (such as Proxmox), rather than natively? For example, The Proxmox VE KVM-based All-in-One with FreeNAS: why couldn't that be simplified to just TrueNAS?
Proxmox > install truenas as vm for your storage backbone > install whatever linux vm's you want on proxmox for running plex/whatever else. 13.03.2021 · ProxMox is awesome and you can simply run docker instances inside one or more VM's, but TrueNAS SCALE supports docker natively afaik. Also my experience with TrueNAS is that it goes better with your storage and backups. ProxMox does better with pure virtualization but the backup stuff is... i'm not a fan personally.
