10.08.2021 · I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 and after waking up from suspend I get a black screen with a cursor. I've run update and upgrade and it didn't fix the problem. I tried switching to lightdm but the problem is the same. I tried pressing ctrl + alt +f1 and ctrl + alt +f3 and nothing happens. I'm on a laptop so I've tried using fn too, but still nothing.

May 06, 2018 · In my case (Ubuntu 18 and dell amd ryzen laptop) closing lid during day works fine, but when I close lid and open it next day, usually I see black screen with backlight when press power button to wake up (lid does not work). So at the moment the solution is that: wake laptop with power button; it wakes but no lockscreen, only backlight
10.06.2021 · My problem is that I cannot suspend my computer properly. Technically I can, but when I come back and try to reopen it, it just doesn't work. My screen remains black with a blinking line, like a typical writing line _. My laptop is a HP Pavilion 15-BC519NS Intel Core i5-9300H/8GB/512GB SSD/GTX 1050/15.6". Here is the output of lspci:
I also encountered the black screen with my new installation, and it was a relatively easy fix. Press CTRL - ALT - F3 to trigger the CLI, and, once logged in, type: sudo nano /etc/default/grub. Find the line with the variable GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, and add nomodeset to the variables, so it looks like this:
23.07.2018 · I had another thread about Linux Mint causing a black screen where i cannot do anything after waking up from suspend and i have to either take the battery out or hold the power button (which cause a little bit of corruption on my dual booted windows 10.)

Jul 23, 2018 · Today i dual booted Xubuntu thinking there wouldnt be as many bugs as Mint considering it is a fairly new distro but upon waking from suspend, i got another black screen but this time i could move my touchpad but the cursor was only a square with green and blue colors (corrupted-looking).
29.11.2014 · On Ubuntu 16, I changed some settings in compizconfig and changed my refresh rate and when I rebooted my screen went black just with the cursor. I solved it by removing xserver and reinstalling ubuntu-desktop in the root shell: sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg; sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-core; sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop
