Over the past couple years I've played with Ubuntu Server, Debian (minimal shell only), FreeBSD, Ubuntu Desktop & Linux Desktop. Always miss the simplicity of NAS4Free so I stay with it. Ubuntu is based off of Debian, only it gets more updates and has a longer LTS schedule (4 years instead of 2 years with Debian). Ubuntu server is nothing like Ubuntu Desktop; it has nowhere near the amount of bloat.

Ubuntu is developed by Canonical. Debian is centered on a minimal, modular installation - you can choose how little or how much you install and anything installed beyond the base won't carry a lot of dependencies, etc. Ubuntu comes with a lot installed and a lot of stuff cannot be uninstalled without wrecking your distro due to dependencies.

Maybe do you guys have any guides and/or software that you would use? I was thinking to use things like https://cockpit-project.org on Ubuntu Server for example. OMV seems like something between Unraid/truenas and Ubuntu Server, but i don't feel like learning Debian.

Debian. It's a server-oriented distro with longer term support, and unlike Ubuntu, actually trustworthy. In CLI terms, next to no difference, although it doesn't default stuff to nano like Ubuntu does, but to vim, but if you like nano, that's changeable.

I think Debian is better for power users, not for beginners/desktop users. Debian is very stable and tested, very good base for production servers, but because this, it lacks many newer drivers (for hardware support), and many software's version lagging far behind current (at least in supported official repo).
