I was actually considering NOT installing DKMS simply to get the experience of having to re-install dependent kernel modules after a kernel update. So that's one reason why I might want to just skip the DKMS.

Feb 18, 2016 · When I updated to CentOS 7.3 with dkms my VirtualBox 5.0 refused to cooperate. I then (via yumex) uninstalled vb 5.0 and installed 5.1. That seemed to get things working again, but it took two reboots afterwards. Hope this info is of some use.
