Since the Workers Unbound beta announcement last year, we’ve been hard at work tuning our systems to prepare for the public launch for Workers Unbound. We’ve seen enormous demand from developers, customers, and the Cloudflare community at large.

Here is a minimal example configuration for Unbound, /etc/unbound/unbound.conf, that uses both Quad9 and Cloudflare Resolver as the forwarding resolvers and validates their TLS certificates against the expected domain names for each service:

Unbound is a package you run locally and is a very full featured DNS resolver (it can also be a forwarder). It can forward DNS requests to the DNS providers of your choice (of which Cloudflare is one), or you can set it up to do the DNS resolution itself, in which case it talks directly to DNS authoritative name servers.

Personal opinion here - unbound is better for privacy. You are your own recursive resolver and no upstream DNS provider has your entire DNS history. Unbound by default uses qname minimisation, which breaks your domain name request into pieces that are the minimum each level of authoritative server needs to give their part of the answer.
