A Debian system is very vanilla and basic, and because of this, from my experience it's generally faster than Ubuntu. Ubuntu is easier to use for sure, but IMO Debian is not overly hard either. If you want GUI tools, they are apt-installable, they just aren't loaded by default, which as a long time Linux user (since Sarge days), I like.
