Peter, all you need to do is enable Veeam VSS processing in Backup job settings, and make sure you do not set the "continue even if VSS fails" checkbox. DC backups made without proper VSS processing are worse than no backup at all.

Basically when I run SureBackup my DC boots once in to Directory Restore mode. Nothing else happens. I manually have to open Msconfig and change the boot options to ensure the server completes a standard boot.

04.04.2016 · The domain controller itself will understand that it has been recovered from backup and will allow normal replication to update everything that has been changed since the backup took place. The automatic recovery should also work for environments with only a single DC. Restoring entire AD infrastructure (AKA “all DC’s are lost”)
Solution: Feel free to check out Veeam Backup & Replication like other spiceheads have mentioned. Veeam has a feature called Veeam Explorer for Active.
