10.09.2021 · Veeam Agent supports backup of external drives that support Microsoft VSS: HDD, SSD, and so on. USB flash drives (USB sticks) are not supported, because it is impossible to create a VSS snapshot on a device of this type. To check if your drive is supported, see this Veeam KB article.

Chuck, please note that though it might be possible to backup free ESXi due to some changes in vSphere 5, generally it is not supported (this is covered in Veeam B&R release notes).
