You can get a full feature version of esxi on a trial basis that works with Veeam. Free esxi does not support Veeam hypervisor level backups.

The only little point I would add here is that you obviously cannot back up the Veeam B&R virtual machine itself. Thus I would recommend you make sure you regularly backup Veeam B&R configuration.
