I've recently left Veeam and decided to make this thread if any of you guys might be interested how it's like to be a Veeam tech support engineer or maybe thinking about starting a career at Veeam. I haven't been with the company for very long, only about half a year, but I would say enough to get a good idea how it's like to work there.

13.10.2010 · That said, with your 14 point retention policy and 6/7 backup schedule, you should not have more than 4 fulls on disk at any given moment. If you have more than 4 fulls, I would recommend opening a support case and providing full logs. It should be clear from logs if data retention policy is being processed correctly (or why it is not processed).

The job was setup to keep 28 versions, with daily backup, and synthetic full every week, but there was 62, and that's way too many, the maximum should be 34 version in this case.

Nov 10, 2015 · At the time our retention was set to 25 points. Our backups are about 1.2tb for full, 30-40gb per incremental. The NAS has 6.8tb space. Normally, we can just squeeze 4 weekly backups on there with the associated incrementals. They're offloaded to tape weekly, so it's not essential to keep them, just quicker if we need access to them within a month.

Apr 05, 2021 · The long-term or Grandfather-Father-Son (GFS) retention policy allows you to store VM backups for long periods of time — for weeks, months and years. For this purpose, Veeam Backup & Replication creates synthetic or active full backup files and marks them with GFS flags. These GFS flags can be of three types: weekly, monthly or yearly.

I guess you're using forward incremenal backup method (don't mix it with forward incremental-forever backup). Unfortunately, there is no way to work around here ...
