Apr 24, 2013 · This is why ZFS & btrfs are such a great filesystems for enterprise storage applications and why we initially integrated QuantaStor with both XFS and btrfs back in ’10. The Bad It’s not so much bad thing but it is just the reality with filesystems that they take about 10 years to develop and mature.

I'm guessing that a lot of it must be possible with BTRFS or ZFS as both are COW in nature and support API's for making a clone of a block?

From my research, based on the design of both XFS and ReFS this is just how the file systems are designed to function.

25.07.2021 · @vt_lyndon - I am using the XFS on ZFS method to provide snapshot and replication capabilities and could share my experiences if you are curious. It has been working well on an 80 TiB ZVOL/XFS filesystem but there are some caveats and unknowns as to the performance difference versus direct XFS and how well it will be able scale.

TrueNAS is BSD / ZFS. We do use TrueNAS as a destination but with the recommendations from v11 we are re-evaluating moving across to xfs for some of the features that it suggests using xfs for. You may use MinIO (S3 compatible) with truenas and set it for backup repository with immutable option in veeam.

Jan 28, 2020 · XFS for anything which does not play well with CoW (or for virtual machines whose datastore already is on a CoW filesystem) or when extremely fast direct I/O is required; ZFS for anything else. For your use case I would use ZFS, especially considering that Ubuntu 18.04 already ships it.

Sadly we could not compare identical systems because our ReFS system is our offsite production repository and the XFS system was build from some old hardware laying around. While ZFS is designed to be reliable, XFS’ main selling point is its support for fast parallel I/O. OpenZFS is designed as a copy-on-write file system which means even when data is being modified, it is done by writing a new data block first and then getting rid of the old data block.
