As @gfullam stated in a comment to @BoffinbraiN's answer, the <dir> you are deleting itself might not be the one which contains files: there might be subdirectories in <dir> that get a "The directory is not empty" message and the only solution then would be to recursively iterate over the directories, manually deleting all their containing files...

08.05.2008 · Hi I just seemed to have a similar problem with a Vista host, VMWare Workstation 6 and a fedora 7 guest. After enabling shared folders in VMWare and enabling sharing of the nominated folder on the Vista host, I solved the problem by re-installing VMWare tools, this was a little accidental, but it did the trick.
