The sand dunes cover over 250 square miles, about half of which are located in the park. The other half are located in the White Sands Missile Testing Range so all of it is protected.

White Sands National Park (upgraded from a Monument) is an amazing place to visit. We spent most of a day here, hiking on the few signed trails and generally exploring the dunes. It is interesting in the heat of the day to touch the sand and find it cool to the touch.

In late October 2019, I visited White Sands National Monument which is approximately 16 miles Southwest of Alamogordo, N.M. (BTW, Alamogordo has several space and missle museums and other venues of interest). White Sands NM has the world's largest white gypsum sand dunes (unlike beach sand which is silica-based).
