Bug summary. I'm using a laptop with a 13" 4k display and sometimes an external 27" 4k display. I'm happy with 200% scaling on the internal and 100% scaling on the external display. In 3.36, HiDPI used to work with XWayland, in that X programs showed at the same scaling as the Wayland programs. Now in 3.38, there's no scaling applied.

xwayland auto-upscaling causes pixelation and should be optional. With a plasma wayland session and a multi-monitor (high and normal DPI) setup / scaling enabled, legacy xwayland applications are automatically scaled up, causing them to look bad on the HIDPI screen. This is especially grave if an application used predominantly during the day ...

Isolating Xwayland in a VM - Thomas Leonard's blog

30.10.2021 · If the application supports HiDPI mode, it will double all the numbers and render a 1000x1000 image and things work correctly. If not, it will render a 500x500 pixel image and the compositor will scale it up. Since Xwayland doesn't support this, it just draws everything too small and Sway scales it up, creating a blurry and unusable mess.

High density surfaces (HiDPI) - The Wayland Protocol
https://wayland-book.com/surfaces-in-depth/hidpi.html
High density surfaces (HiDPI) In the past several years, a huge leap in pixel density in high-end displays has been seen, new displays packing twice as many pixels into the same physical area as we've seen in years past. We call these displays "HiDPI", short for "high dots per inch". However, these displays are so far ahead of their "LoDPI ...

My biggest issue has been that XWayland programs do not scale nicely like in X itself, at least when using fractional scaling it ends up blurry, I assume because they cannot redraw it at a higher resolution. This is a deal breaker since on all devices I use some form of scaling either because all my monitors are HiDPi.
