Veeam does a good job of backup and replication, but if you want a failover of minutes or seconds for critical VMs, with some orchestration (updating firewall rules or something) you need Zerto. Zerto is not great at backup, snapshot, etc. and Zerto is priced per VM which adds up. Backup everything with Veeam, replicate critical VMs with Zerto.

Zerto can provide lower RPOs (for now), so for VMs where you need replication up to seconds then it is still your best bet. We still use both products for clients in this scenario, with Zerto replicating mission critical VMs in VPGs for low RPO VMs. Veeam does backups of all VMs and replicates VMs with higher 15+min. I am evaluating Zerto and Veeam. I am curious as to what my peers recommend? It looks like Veeam Availability suite Enterprise + is on par with Zerto? Or am I mistaken? If it is on par I believe it would be significantly cheaper as I could protect all vm's in my environment rather then Zerto protecting just 150 of my most critical vm's.

Veeam is hard to beat, unless you need less than 10 minute RPO then Zerto is awesome (which is usually 10 second or less RPO), and on the backup side Veeam is the clear leader. We do have customers that use Veeam for backup (and DR replication for lower tier servers) and Zerto for mission critical DR.
