12.06.2009 · The only way to improve the write speed would be to add more raidz vdevs to the pool. For comparison, my home box (3x 120 GB SATA drives in single raidz1 vdev) only gets 5.5 MBytes/s write and 8.5 MBytes/s read. OUCH!! Using the same iozone command as you did. It's a 32-bit FreeBSD 7.1 install with 2 GB of RAM and only 128 MB for zfs_arc_max.

09.10.2020 · Typically hard drive of 5TiB of can hold about 4.5 TB of data, that’s around 86%-90% of the advertised number, depending on which OS you are using. For example, if we use the striped design, which is the maximum possible storage capacity in ZFS, the usable space will be 8 x 5TiB x 90% = 36TB.

This include ZFS tunables. Optane works pretty well as an L2ARC, especially if you're not using anything crazy (think 100Gbe). A little (you can get 16GB sticks for around $10) can go a long way if it's in front of a relatively slow HDD array. It even persists across reboots these days which is NICE. ARC can't do this.

26.01.2020 · You can mroe or less compare zfs performance to normal performance if you comapre mirror<->raid1, raidz1<->raid5 and raidz2<->raid6. It might be a bit slower on zfs because it's a enterprise grade filesystem, but not by too much. The "problem" with each raid is the same on zfs as with any normal raid.
