Hi Arch community! Every now and then I see some missing font symbols (the rectangles with some letters inside) and I usually either don't bother enough to find which font package I am missing or I give up after a few minutes of searching and installing wild packages that are recommended on reddit/somewhere else.

Somewhere under the general recommendations part of the wiki it suggests installing ttf-dejavu fonts (I've made sure I've done this on all of my installs so far). You might try that as well as any other font packages you think you might be missing.

Bitmap fonts are sometimes used as fallbacks for missing fonts, which may cause text to be rendered pixelated or too large. Use the 70-no-bitmaps.conf preset to disable this behavior. To disable embedded bitmap for all fonts: ~/.config/fontconfig/conf.d/20-no-embedded.conf

I recommend to install Linux Libertine and Noto fonts. pacman -S noto-fonts noto-fonts-emoji ttf-linux-libertine. restart your browser after installing new fonts to take effect.

The problem is that xpdf has no font dependencies so that if a package that provides fonts usable by xpdf (e.g. ghostscript) isn't installed you get the following errors when you run xpdf and, if the document doesn't have fonts embedded in it, no text.
