You want to know why any dd-wrt can not mesh with another: wireless chipsets are different, mesh is not standard. Try to mesh any of those systems with each other and you will see what I mean. WDS is not even a standard.

WDS is a mesh network. Routers must almost always have the SAME chipset type for WDS to work, and any non dd-wrt routers must be WDS compatible. Using identical routers is best, but not always necessary if all devices have the same chipset types. (All Broadcom or all Atheros etc) WDS Linked router network [ edit] OLSR

In the sense that, yes this is software, anything is possible, a DD-WRT node could be configured to attached to an AREDN network. This would be a fun experiment to do in the lab, but risks bringing instability when trying to co-mingle DD-WRT nodes with an AREDN mesh network.

IMHO the APs should all be hardwired, as mesh APs that aren't will eat up precious wireless bandwidth and slow everything down. You can create these untethered APs in DDWRT too, but please don't! You can probably configure them as AP's or wireless repeaters with the right build of DDWRT, but unless you buy a very specific model of mesh kit, ...

WDS. Extend the Wireless access area using more routers. Extra routers does not need any wired connections. WDS is a mesh network.
