03.08.2015 · Once set graphical apps may start working. A display manager (e.g. kdm, gdm,...), is typically started at boot to handle a graphical login sequence. This starts X, gets user and password info, logs you in, sets up / runs your desktop and sets up the DISPLAY variable for you.

No protocol specified Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly? Command pgadmin3 runs well under pavel (my main user account). The answers of a question on this suggested either some server connection magic (not my case - I try to run it on localhost), or setting DISPLAY variable.
When I first installed pgadmin3, I was able to launch it using the command "pgadmin3 &", and PG Admin would launch correctly using my local X server. Something has happened though, and now PG Admin will no longer launch. It bounces back with the message "Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly?"

07.11.2020 · If you are running this in VNC or some other remote connection tool, those generally start with DISPLAY=:10 and sometimes they have an extra decimal and zero, so DISPLAY=:10.0. I cannot remember why. If for some reason you are not using DISPLAY=:0 or :1 then we could investigate discovering what the DISPLAY value is but I won't drown you in those crazy …
