Moving away from the previous tournament based ranking system, this new match based system involves an exchange of points between the 2 teams competing in each match played.

The ranking is used to determine seedings and qualification requirements for future IIHF tournaments. The current leader in rankings is Canada in men's play and the United States in women's play.
