08.12.2021 · Wayland support in the KDE Plasma Workspaces is in a tech-preview state. The workspaces have been developed for X11 and much functionality relies on X11. To be able to make proper use of Wayland these bits have to be rewritten. The most complex task is to implement Wayland support in KWin, KDE Plasma's Compositor and Window Manager.

Wayland still doesn't sound like it's quite there for KDE yet at least for me, 5.14 release might be getting closer to it though. Really depends on your needs from the OS, give it a try, it's not difficult to switch between the two.

KDE Frameworks 5.89 open-source software suite is now available for users of the KDE Plasma desktop environment with various improvements.

KDE sets focus areas every other year or so, at the moment the community-supported KDE Goals are "All About the Apps", "Wayland" and "Consistency". At some point, possibly next Akademy, those will be revisited.
