30.12.2016 · Flatpak software is currently available in Arch Linux, Debian, Fedora, Mageia, Solus and Ubuntu. It is focused on desktops only. AppImages are developed by Simon Peter. As in snaps or Flatpak, the package includes all libraries necessary to run the program. AppImage programs are not sandboxed and they don't require root rights to run.

The first big difference is that Snap is a project of Canonical that in the future intends that all Ubuntu programs will use this technology. While Flatpak is not associated with any Linux distribution and its goal is to improve the installation of the programs in Linux.

Snappy and Flatpak allow packaging to occur completely upstream at the developers side, which means they no longer have to cough up source code to whomever who will package.
