Problem: I sometimes cannot access specific websites for days at a time and ping returns "destination port unreachable".

Now I have the problem that none of the clients can do ICMP ping to outside the local network. From OpenWRT device, via ssh: root@OpenWrt:~# ping google.com PING google.com (172.217.17.46): 56 data bytes ^C --- google.com ping statistics --- 5 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss. My internet connection is fine.

You could try changing the IP of your OpenWrt router to 192.168.2.1 for example and give it a one more try.
