if the device has a single port, it's probably configured as a router anyway because that's what OpenWrt usually does so it has a static IP 192.168.1.1, no gateway or dns server set up so it won't connect to the Internet (or even local network if it is not 192.168.1.x) in this state.

opkg update wont work. ping to any local domain name wont work but to an ip address it would work. ntp update wont work, etc., now, i go and configure pihole ip in /etc/resolve.conf, everything marked above would start working. im not sure why this is happening as i have already set pi hole as dns server in both lan and wan interfaces.

28.08.2014 · Other advantages include that one DNS cache is being used for all clients (OpenWrt's DNS cache) and that you can still use OpenWrt's hosts file to add custom entries etc. I've only tested this method under OpenWrt 15.05 Chaos Calmer but I guess it should work the same way in previous versions.

The standard way of operation for OpenWrt is that the router acts as a DNS server for all the clients (so that is what they receive by DHCP).

I have added the custom DNS server to the DHCP server (this works! But I also want to make openwrt forward all DNS requests to my DNS server.).
