Depends on your router, but generally yes this is possible. If you have a Switch menu in your Network tab, then it may be possible to use it as a "smart" switch (VLANs both tagged and port based). Even if it doesn't, you could still use the switch and possibly tagged VLANs

Hello, I want to set up my old router that is currently running OpenWRT to act like a Ethernet Switch. I have an ethernet switch but it has issues and does not work correctly. I have tried looking online and see people doing it via wireless and changing the IP that it distributes but I want this to basically extend my main network over ethernet like a switch.

This OpenWRT router (a WRT54G V2.2) as a Netgear smart switch has worked fine 3 months now without any issues. I did an additional mod to it, to have it run off the Ubiquiti POE power supply, and pass the POE to also power the Ubiquiti M900 node.
