In both cases, the VM reboots after a few seconds.

Just compiled 34815 and tested, sysupgrade is working now ! For those who currently have sysupgrade problem, simply copy the now compiled common.sh to /lib/upgrade/ or refer the changes then edit yourself, it is a shell script text file.
