Aug 31, 2020 · Wouldn't running OpenWrt in a VM make the attack surface bigger? But my x86 router is pretty powerful and has much space left after OpenWrt is installed. I don want to somehow run a full distro alongside it. I'm also eyeing for the docker support in OpenWrt 20, which seems to make it possible to run a full distro directly in it.

09.09.2020 · I wouldn't try to upgrade your installation. I'd keep it in case it all goes wrong which lets face it happens easily and just did. I presume you've got oodles of disk space because your running openwrt on x86 hardware as all disks are huge to openwrt.

So if you installed OpenWrt x86-64 openwrt-version-number-x86-64-combined-ext4.img.gz you need to choose same image to do a sysupgrade if you installed Openwrt with openwrt-version-number-x86-64-combined-squashfs.img.gz you need that image to do a firmware upgrade.
