The VPN itself can't block ads, but most VPNs (at least the good ones) have their own ad-blocking tools that may need to be manually turned on.

Aug 28, 2018 · My FireTV, Firestick, Android phones and tablets with the Youtube app are unanfected by the blocking on my pfSense box. I have yet to take the time for packet capture deep dive. I just got OpenVPN working so I can route my traffic from my phone through home whenever I am out and I also implemented encrypted DNS.

So yeah, youtube ads can be blocked by DNS. Saying otherwise is just plain wrong. If you're still getting ads in youtube on your devices, it's probably because the phones aren't using the pihole as DNS, or its somehow bypassing the DNS server. I'm running the default blocklists in pihole. Nothing more fancy than that.

From what I understand of both, youtube ads come in ipv6 and are usually impossible to block using pfblockerng since they use host files and the like to block normal ads. Ublockorigin from what I remember, inserts itself in between your connection and youtube and blocks the ads from rolling. I may be incorrect but that is what I remember.
