You can right-click on a VM and choose Hibernate. Proxmox will create a snapshot and then release the VM's resources. If and when you restart Proxmox the VM will start (if it is set to auto start) almost instantly from the snapshot and then the snapshot will be automatically deleted. The only caveat is the the VM's time will be off.

But nothing I try seems to stop this VM - how can I force it "off"? It's even preventing me from shutting down the Proxmox host itself!

It isn't Proxmox's fault that the VM or CT refuses to shutdown. If you have something running that is either hung, or takes an unreasonably long time to dhutdown, then you issues stop. If another software like ESX doesn't make you do this, it is doing underneath the hood so to speak and not revealing what it is doing.

Jul 08, 2014 · I just use "shutdown -h now". the system already shuts down the vms before the host does when you trigger a shutdown. as long as you can use the shutdown button on a vm and have it actually shutdown and not sit there like it didn't get the message then the host will go down once everything else does first.
