Dec 07, 2015 · One reason we use Proxmox VE at STH is that it is a Debian based Linux distribution with ZFS, Ceph and GlusterFS support along with a KVM hypervisor and LXC support. When you have a smaller number of nodes (4-12) having the flexibility to run hyper converged infrastructure atop ZFS or Ceph makes the setup very attractive.

Dec 22, 2021 · Ceph has quite some requirements if you want decent performance. Fast network (only for ceph ideally) with low latency, needs more CPU and memory ressources on the nodes for its services but is a fully clustered storage. That means that all nodes see the same all the time. ZFS is a local storage so each node has its own.

ZFS ARC and L2ARC works allot better than caching on ceph. But this inability to move data out of vdevs and remove them from the pool is turning into a major roadblock for me. Ceph not only offers that but you could migrate to entire new nodes by adding nodes, rebalancing the cluster and removing old nodes.
