If you're new to the non-systemd world, I'd recommend OpenRC if you want a "just works" system and runit if you want to get a taste of a more scripting-heavy (though still easy to use) system. suite66 aims to be user-friendly, but it's not very popular which ...

Feb 21, 2018 · What I've read, runit is lighter and faster generally than OpenRC (so a big YMMV here.). I think runit can run with only busybox alongside of it. That would make it quite light at least. But I really haven't bothered to switch. My uptimes tend to be around 60d, so boot time isn't a factor for me. :P.

OpenRC is made up of several modular components, the main ones being an init (optional), the core dependency management system and a daemon supervisor (optional). Runit has been dead from its own developer, who says it doesn't need any further development, it met all of its goals. Void does slight modifications on its application from time to time and most who use runit follow void's application. OpenRC is just a reformed old way that BSDs and sysvinit managed scripts, it is like a refurbished antique.
