The software will automatically select the segregated approach in many cases, especially 3D models. On the other hand, the fully coupled approach is used by default for most 2D models. From my previous experience, normally fully coupled solver requires a large memory, and due to this reason, I have to select segregated solver. But I have compared these two solver in some testing case, and got different converged result.
Dec 18, 2012 · This is why coupled solver is more difficult despite of coupling. In fact that coupled version makes it difficult. The SIMPLE is a segregated algorithm to solve the same system and has shown that it is much more effective than the coupled version.

28.11.2018 · Coupled solver are superior to any segregated solver as it builds the stiffness matrix in different way incorporating the pressure correction within the momentum correction step. This would lead to quicker convergence and sometimes has some good influence on solving physically tough coupled cases like nature convection compared to segregated ones.
