01.12.2020 · Pi-hole. My home network is based around Ubiquiti’s UniFi, with a Security Gateway (USG) handling the NAT/firewall/routing duties. For ad blocking and to have better control over DNS I use Pi-hole running on a Raspberry Pi.. With the following settings you can have the two working well together with UniFi doing DHCP and Pi-hole doing DNS.

My Unifi Controller (and by extension my USG I suppose?) handles DHCP and has the "LAN" defined as a /24 network. However, I have added several additional "Corporate" type Networks in the Unifi controller with VLAN tags, effectively making my home network range a /16. I have Pihole set up as a VM with a static IP.

Follow Method 3 until step 5. Copy all domains except the site you are visiting and paste it into the "Domains to be added" box of the Pi-hole blacklist page. Add a comment like temp or test to help you find them later. Refresh the page and you should see many things breaks and media don't loads. That's normal.

One note, you can also set up the pihole as the resolver and set up the internal search domain that the pihole should use to forward internal requests to the USG to resolve. I stay away from hardcoding static ip’s and just set “use fixed ip” on the USG …

The USG is using your pihole for its upstream DNS. None of the clients are connecting directly to the pihole so the pihole won’t be able to differentiate requests, because it sees them all coming from the USG. Change the DNS server in the LAN/client networks to be the pihole’s IP address.

WAN I've set to 8.8.8.8. LAN I've set DHCP Server to PiHole. PIH I've set upstream DNS to the USG, and conditional forwarding to the USG. So my devices tell the PIH their NETBIOS names which it records for the admin panel instead of just IPs then ask my PIH, it filters then asks the gateway, and the gateway just uses Google DNS.
