I have 3 vCenter servers and a PSC, and have just created a new cert for the VMCA as an intermediate CA using the Microsoft Root CA for our Forest. Then the backups blew up. The procedure you wrote up fixed it!

So if the certificate isn’t valid, you will see the below error:
