08.06.2017 · You can expand/extend a partition while it live but only on a thick provision lazy zeroed .vmdk while it live that running Windows. You just can't expand it pass 2TB unless you turn the entire server offline. Only time you should ever delete the .lck files if the VM is powered off and you still getting the error about it being locked.

When an ESXi/ESX host accesses a virtual machine disk file on a NFS based datastore a .lck-xxx lock file is generated in the same directory as the disk file. This file prevents other ESXi/ESX hosts from accessing the virtual disk file.
