KDE is prettier out of the box than XFCE. In fact, I'll argue you'd be hard-pressed to find an uglier DE than Xfce out of the box. LXDE maybe, but they're similar. Xfce is a lot easier to rice (IMHO), as there's less options than KDE. I'd argue xfce4panel is more customisable than KDE's default panel, although folks tend to use Latte nowadays.

If you like eyecandy and effects, try gnome, kde, deepin or cinnamon. If you want things to just work, try xfce, kde, mate or gnome. If you like tinkering and tweaking, try xfce, openbox, awesome, i3 or bspwm. If you are coming from MacOS, try Cinnamon but with the panel on top.
