02.08.2015 · I can understand Belorussian (because some words are similar to Ukrainian, some to Russian, and some words are like mixture of both, but understandable) but I can't understand Polish. I can guess meaning of some polish words after 10 minutes of thinking, which is, of course, not an option if you want to understand Polish speech.
I can read Ukrainian, but I did study some, but I won't understand spoken word unless it's from Eastern Ukraine or it's a children's movie. Many Russians mistakenly think that they would understand Ukrainian because they have heard someone speak and they understood. Large parts of Ukraine speak in a mix of Ukrainian and Russian.

Yes, most versions of Ukrainian are at least 50% understandable to Russians. A month-long course can improve that to 90%. No amount of learning will allow a Russian to pass for a native speaker, because no two people will agree which version of Ukrainian is the real one.
