The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Creating a reference point' I have tried a few different VM's, cleanly built, and they have the same issue.

I've had a couple of guests have "Converting a snapshot to a reference point - Scheduled"...and it just hangs there. Replication is still occurring via Hyper-V. The only way I've been able to get rid of the message is by canceling.

10.11.2016 · VM sitting on the Host's Local Disk, replicates fine, and I can power it up, with no issues. I cannot see the "Creating a reference point" mentioned anywhere in the Event Log. When I move the machine storage back to the Windows 2016 SMB Share, I see the issue again.

So what you will need to do is to create the recovery media (as an ISO) as fast as you can. Store it somewhere and then boot a fresh VM on that ISO. Then do a bare metal restore and restore the entire VM. 2.
