Also, do not start off by deleting the virtual machine. That may or may not trigger a cleanup of AVHDX files. Don't take the gamble.

Repeat with each avhdx file until you have a flat disk. Once the disk is flat, shut down the server. Edit the hard disk file to point to the flat vhdx file and start the VM again. If this isn't feasible for you, perform a shared nothing virtual migration OR a VM export (delete the VM then reimport). Edit: With the manual merge.

Edit the child avhdx file and merge it with the parent that you noted earlier manually. Repeat with each avhdx file until you have a flat disk.

Solution: Do you only want to delete the unneeded vhds from previous snapshots? They will normally get deleted when you totally shut down the vm.

This is typical when a host update occurs, the backup is running and somewhere it gets restarted due to the updates and the backups were not completed yet. The only way I can find now is to manually merge your excess avhd. files:

I’m using Veeam, and i have like 10 or 12 .avhdx files, when i listed the checkpoints only listed “DPM-**” which is the actual checkpoint i wanted to deleted.. the query worked, but the .avhx didn’t merge at all, it just dissapeared the “checkpoint” from hyper-v (btw. im using scvmm too).

Jul 19, 2017 · HyperV however does not really delete the snapshot files until the next shutdown. That might be your issue to. ( Backup software usually takes a different approach ) So sit tight and update us when it's done and you have fired the server back up. Then keep an eye on the files to make sure it's really your backup software.

27.02.2019 · Instead of completely deleting the old VM you can just remove the old hard drive pointing to the avhdx file and add a new hard drive pointing to the parent. You can do this both in 1 commit rather than removing, clicking apply and adding then click apply.

Eventually you will probably end up in a situation where you dont want to delete anything becaase you aren't 100% sure if its in use or not.
