Dec 11, 2016 · GDM provides no option for Wayland. I just decided to try Wayland today and read that GDM should choose Wayland by default, unless I choose "GNOME on Xorg" explicitly. However, I see only two options, "GNOME" and "GNOME Classic", and the "GNOME" option uses x11 (as confirmed by loginctl and XDG_SESSION_TYPE). I'm using the NVIDIA driver.

15.08.2020 · Seems to work fine. Gnome-layout-switcher has an option to enable wayland. If it is grayed out, it is because it detects you have nvidia card. Nvidia doesn’t play well with wayland, and gnome probably silently disables it on the background even if you enable it. Im using Intel IGPU, the option isn’t grayed out.

The solution is the same as above: Prevent /usr/lib/gdm-disable-wayland from running upon nvidia module loading. Notice that GDM on Wayland will no longer work once /usr/lib/gdm-disable-wayland has run. This is because WaylandEnable=false has been written into /run/gdm/custom.conf, which overrides /etc/gdm/custom.conf.

Open /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and ensure WaylandEnable=false is commented.
