(I think the reason is that the X font protocol doesn't have any place for an alpha channel.) GTK and Qt render text in the client using the FreeType library, getting a pixmap with an alpha channel as the result.

Xft is the library that provides scaling, anti-aliasing and subpixel rendering of scalable fonts. There are two options if you want to avoid AA. 1. use bitmap fonts, 2. turn of AA with Xft.

In Fedora, when fontconfig anti-aliasing is enabled, fonts have their thickness proportional to the font size. Below, the thickness is different for 8, 9 and 10pt sizes. In Ubuntu, on the other hand, even when anti-aliasing is enabled, all 8, 9 and 10pt sizes have 1 pixel thickness.
