Aug 23, 2019 · The Linux crowd. The first batch of routers are all based on Linux. The VyOS version I used (1.2.2), is based on Debian Jessie with a modern 4.19 kernel and runs FRR. The CHR is based on an ancient 3.x Linux kernel. The plain Linux install will be the latest Debian Buster, with the repo version of FRR, 6.0.1.

OpenWRT achieves about 140Mbit/s. APU delivers more than 600Mbit/s with Wireguard VPN. If you have a choice between OpenVPN and Wigeguard, choose the latter. More detailed information can be found in APU OpenVPN and Wireguard performance benchmark. TLSense routers achieve between 300Mbit/s and 1Gbit/s throughput with OpenVPN depending on the model.

AFAIK, the only real difference is the lack of a WebGUI interface for VyOS. I mean, from a pragmatic standpoint, VyOS is top notch, but a bit low for the homelabber that needs some coddling while learning, especially on the one device that can't go down without the Wrath of the Significant Other.

26.12.2021 · Both OpenWRT and DD-WRT have a user interface that’s at least 10x more complicated than the average pre-installed router firmware. However, despite offering a wide range of features, DD-WRT’s user interface is pretty sleek compared to that of OpenWRT.
