My suggestion is to do a conversion. I know it sucks, but you risk a lot if you don't know what you are doing delete orphaned snapshots from CLI. You can always open a case with vmware if you have support, I have many times for similar issues (granted I had 200+ orphaned snapshots).

We were in a bit of a hurry to get it back up and running so I removed it from the inventory and created a new VM and pointed it to the VMDK of the original, and it's now working fine.
