DNS on a USG (or edgerouter) will only bring tears, especially if you want things to resolve by a user set hostname. There's an epic thread on this on the ubnt forums right now with a mostly milquetoast response from ubnt saying that it can't work the way users are wanting it to, despite using dnsmasq under the hood, which numerous other Soho routers use and have no issue.

Jan 07, 2019 · The USG primarily is a DNS forwarder, exposing itself by an IP(v4 and v6) address on every VLAN. It also means that on every VLAN there is a DNS available within the same subnet. The primary forwarding servers for my USG are my two AD servers. My AD servers obviously maintain a DNS for my domain, and forward unresolvable queries to my PiHole.

This is what the USG will use to look up Names. I think the WAN > Preferred/Alternate DNS can be set for all UniFi devices so they can bypass the DNS servers listed in the Networks > DHCP Name Server. I left it blank on a switch and put a bad address in an AP as a test.
